Support for Entrepreneurs Must Come Before Growth

Support for entrepreneurs in Britain is collapsing in real time, and barely anyone’s talking about it. We’ve got politicians debating inflation and tax, while the foundations of enterprise quietly erode. Every week, I speak to small business owners fighting to grow in a system that works against them. They’re not short on drive; they’re short on structure, clarity, and proper backing.

The Warning Signs Are Already Here

Growth has slowed. Job creation is stalling. Confidence is shrinking. This isn’t theoretical, it’s happening. And it’s no surprise. Take away financial support, bury people in red tape, and you’ll kill momentum stone dead. The economy doesn’t move on sentiment. It moves because people take risks and build something where nothing existed before.

Britain Is Falling Behind

I’ve spent time recently with industry leaders across Europe. In most places, business development is a national focus. They streamline the process. They reduce friction. They know that backing the right people builds stronger local communities. In Britain? We talk about growth and innovation while making it harder for the people doing the heavy lifting.

Our Culture Needs Fixing Too

This isn’t just about policy. It’s a mindset. We treat failure like weakness, risk like stupidity, and ambition like a liability. That’s killing our next generation of startup founders before they’ve even begun. The system should develop them, not drain them.

What Happens If We Keep Ignoring Entrepreneurs?

Ignore the people building businesses, and you stall everything else: job creation, innovation, progress. I’ve seen it firsthand. Founders burn out. Companies plateau. Sectors stagnate. You can’t grow a country while sidelining its most driven people.

I’ve Been There, on Both Sides

I’ve built more than 15 companies. I’ve also lost everything. And I can tell you: this life isn’t just technical. It’s emotional. Running a business affects your health, relationships, and identity. You carry everything. And if we ignore the emotional side of enterprise, we fail before we begin.

Support Has to Mean More Than Words

If we’re serious about sustainable growth, we need more than soundbites. We need actions like:

  • Local access to targeted support, not generic advice lines.
  • Fast-track funding decisions that match the pace of modern enterprise.
  • Recognition that mental health is part of the business model, not a side note.
  • Investment in small business development centres and real-world mentoring.
  • Cut the admin theatre and stop drowning people in pointless reporting.

This Is About Removing Friction

This isn’t about handouts. It’s about removing blockers. That includes better access to technical assistance, less time wasted on form-filling, and more trust in people with a track record. Our best founders aren’t asking for favours, they’re asking for a system that doesn’t slow them down.

Back the Builders, Not the Bureaucrats

The people I work with and invest in aren’t chasing headlines. They’re making payroll, solving real problems, and creating long-term value. They don’t need more admin. They need infrastructure, guidance, and a clear path to growth.

Growth Doesn’t Happen in Westminster

It happens in industrial units, co-working spaces, and spare bedrooms. In real work. In risk. If we want a stronger, more competitive Britain, we need to stop tripping over ourselves with over-regulation and start investing in the people creating change.
