Andrew Scott BBC Interview: Turning Setbacks into Success

The Andrew Scott BBC interview wasn’t just a personal milestone. When John Darvall invited me onto his morning show, it became an opportunity to speak candidly about failure, resilience, and what it really takes to build a business from the ground up.
What did I talk about on the BBC?
During the interview, John explored my journey in some depth. From growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles to surviving a terrorist bomb attack, it was a conversation that pulled no punches.
But the part that resonated most was when I opened up about losing everything, including my self-confidence, after a business failure. With two young sons and a mountain of debt, I started again from scratch. That’s where the real story begins.
A different kind of success story
I’ve never related to the polished entrepreneur narrative. The truth? Success came through struggle. I made mistakes, some big enough to flatten everything I’d built.
But that failure taught me more than any book or business school. It made me mission-led. My purpose today is to help other founders avoid the same traps and build businesses that last.
Selling Business Leader: Why timing matters
One thing I spoke about was the sale of Business Leader, the media company I founded and grew. In 2023, I sold it to Richard Harpin, the man behind the £4.1 billion Homeserve PLC business, and author of “How to make a billion in 9 steps“.
It wasn’t luck. It was years of graft, timing, and the right network. If you’re building a business to sell, know your value and your timing.
Why did I do the Andrew Scott BBC interview?
Because entrepreneurs need a voice. The media rarely shows the real side of business, the failure, stress, and financial risk. This has to change. If we want more people to start or scale companies, we need to be honest about what it takes.
The mainstream media need to support entrepreneurs. Dig into the stories that inspire innovation, growth and job creation. I told John Darvall this on air, and I’ll say it again here. Many of Britain’s entrepreneurs are struggling.
What advice would I give to struggling entrepreneurs?
Don’t quit just because you hit a few hurdles. I’ve been broke, and broken. You don’t need the perfect business idea, just a purpose. Build around that. Surround yourself with the right people. The world is full of great ideas, but success follows action, not ideas.
